Children and pedestrian safety

On Behalf of | Feb 13, 2024 | Personal Injury

Pedestrian accidents involving children are a serious concern that every parent should be aware of. Reckless drivers, distractions and lack of awareness can all contribute to these unfortunate incidents.

Parents and caregivers should go over precautions to ensure the safety of children on the streets.

Road safety and role models

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that almost 8,000 people lost their lives in pedestrian accidents during 2021. Sadly, some of these accidents claimed the lives of children. It is important to start teaching road safety to kids from a young age. They should always look both ways before crossing the street, use designated crosswalks and follow traffic signals. Children should listen carefully for approaching vehicles and make eye contact with drivers before crossing.

Children learn by observing their parents and caregivers. Adults must set a good example by following road rules and practicing safe pedestrian behavior. By demonstrating responsible behavior, parents instill these habits in their child and make them more aware of potential dangers.

Distractions and supervision

Both children and adults should avoid distractions while walking. Children should put away electronic devices and keep their attention focused on their surroundings. Headphones may impair hearing or distract from potential hazards. By keeping distractions to a minimum, children can better assess the traffic and react to any unexpected situations. Children under the age of 10 should always have adult supervision while crossing the street. Holding their hand and walking together not only ensures their safety but also reinforces the importance of being cautious.

Preventing pedestrian accidents involving children requires a collective effort from parents, caregivers and drivers. Remember, safety should always be the top priority when it comes to children’s well-being.
